Married to Nadine Lynn Schultz for 37 years.
WORK: San Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo, California, September 1962. This is where I apprenticed the trade; and at the same time got a free education in Old Testament history and New Testament theology. My wife and I became Canadian citizens and continue to live in Canada. My first and continuing love is Libraries. I worked in academic libraries, first as a non-professional (1958-1962), then as a Librarian (1962-2002; 40 years) BA degree from the University of Nebraska, 1960, MLS degree from the University of California at Berkeley,1962; and MBA degree from Simon Fraser University in 1977. My career spanned the romance of Library computerization-and my career was successful in actively and successfully participating in that saga. Before I left the University Library at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, the Library had made a truly successful and state of the art transition to computerized full text and online computer services. We were into our 3rd generation computers at that time. 1990-2002 (retired Dec.31, 2002) My first job as a Librarian at the San Francisco Theological Seminary, San Anselmo, California. Where I learned the trade and got a religious education as a side benefit.
I was fired from two library jobs. I attribute this to my "character"-making waves, so to speak. But these experiences were growth experiences. I persevered and became a successful Librarian with a lot of professional accomplishments---all to do with the computerization of libraries and their collections. Continuing education throughout my career provided needed stimulus and opportunity for change and advancement.
INTERESTS: I have a serious interest in films and film history-which I share with two close friends. I've always been an active film viewer; but retirement has given me the leisure to pursue this seriously. I continue to follow U.S. politics through C-SPAN (especially Washington Journal and Q & A with Brian Lamb) and National Public Radio (esp. WBEZ, This American Life) on the Internet---I do this on the computer because Canadian television and radio does not carry these U.S. stations. LHS and Lincoln Nebraska continue to figure heavily in my dreams during sleep, and figure heavily in the mythology of my origins. I believe that my character and interests were formed in Nebraska. And that is who I remain after 50 years and thousands of miles away and now a proud citizen of Canada. I've been lucky in my career and my wife. Although we did not have any children, we have a lot of nieces and nephews.
REFLECTIONS: No deep thoughts. The most discouraging thing to me is that all of life's and a nation's or people's hard lessons appear to have to be re-learned (or not) over and over again by each new generation. Unfortunately for education and parenting, I don't see that we are very successful in passing the wisdom gained and the hard lessons learned on to succeeding generations. So I don't think there is a collective "salvation". Life has gotten better for a lucky subset of our species---but it seems to have been accomplished at a great cost to the environment and the enmity of others of our species. I value the small enclaves of rationality and ease that have enabled some of us to live a comfortable and long life; but so many do not have access to this kind of life.
