Most of my community work involved Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts; and involvement in 4-H with our children and our granddaughter, Jessica. I also home schooled Jessica, 3rd grade through 12th. Semi-retired in 2000-may retire sometime in the murky future.Although we have downshifted considerably the past five years, we continue with our consulting business.
INTERESTS: At age 12 I became hooked on horses when our next door neighbors bought a Shetland pony for their sons. We purchased an Arabian gelding for our daughter when she turned 14-years-old in 1977. Then my brother gave her a 2-year-old quarter horse filly in 1982 when she graduated from high school. We continued our love of horses with our granddaughter, Jessica, buying her a purebred Arabian gelding in 1994. Jessica started showing Arabians in 4-H and on the Arabian show circuit, which led us down an entirely new path. She showed her Arabians until she graduated from high school in 2003 and started college. Since we no longer participate in horse shows, I have turned my attention to working on the computer (something besides Excel) and sewing. I constructed several of Jessica's show costumes; including a native Bedouin costume for both she and her horse.
Significant Events: Home schooling was definitely a challenge. Since that was not my field I learned to extend myself to organizations and people associated with home schooling; and juggled that with my work.
World Events: 9/11 definitely impacted my perception of living in a secure country. Watching the towers crumble was an inconceivable sight.
LIFE CHANGES: My biggest life change has been learning to live with a disability associated with back and knee injuries.
The 50's - I miss the slower pace of life, and the emphasis placed on family values
Thank goodness for CD's so I can listen to the "old tunes" that were so much a part of our lives.
REFLECTIONS: I think our generation had it pretty good compared to the youth of today. They have so much exposure to everything out there that they aren't allowed the degree of buffer we enjoyed. Granted, society wasn't as accelerated when we were young. However, being acquainted with a representative of the Office of Juvenile Affairs has shed a lot of light on the challenges young people face today.
